To the Editor:
As Monroe’s State Representative, I have had the privilege of working closely with First Selectman Terry Rooney on Housing issues, including the attack from Hartford on local control and the vetoed Housing bill HB5002.
Terry understands that the strength of our towns lies in local control — the ability of residents and locally elected officials to make decisions that best fit our community’s character, infrastructure, and long-term vision. He has been a steadfast advocate for preserving Monroe’s unique identity and ensuring that development decisions remain where they belong: in the hands of the people who live here.
That’s why Terry and I have stood shoulder to shoulder in opposing HB5002, the misguided housing bill that threatens to strip towns of their decision-making authority and impose one-size-fits-all zoning mandates from Hartford.
While we all agree that affordable housing is an important issue, the answer is not to override local planning commissions or jeopardize the careful balance that makes communities like Monroe such desirable places to live.
Terry Rooney has never wavered in his defense of Monroe’s right to govern itself by speaking out and advocating for the Governor to veto HB5002. He listens to residents, fights for responsible growth, and works every day to protect the character and quality of life that make Monroe special.
I support Terry Rooney for reelection as Monroe’s First Selectman. He is exactly the kind of leader we need— someone who stands firm for local control, safety and the values that define our town.
Sincerely,
Rep. Tony Scott
State Representative 112th District (Monroe, Easton & Trumbull)
