MONROE, Conn. — A 37-year-old Monroe man escaped injury after losing control of his Dodge Durango on a patch of black ice, while heading north on Wild Horse Court, just south of Morgan Lane, early in the morning on Jan. 7.
At approximately 5:20 a.m., police said the vehicle went into a slide while approaching a slight left curve, went over the curb on the west side of the road and down an embankment, before coming to final rest against a tree.
The driver was issued a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions and a tow truck pulled the Durango back up onto the road.
The Monroe Public Works Department was notified to salt the road.
Monroe man not on the hook for $14k
A Monroe man avoided being defrauded out of $14,459 after noticing and disputing a credit card account he did not open, according to police.
On Jan. 9, he came to the Monroe Police Department to file a complaint. He told an officer he noticed failed attempts to open fraudulent accounts for WAYMC/CBNA, and LightStream Personal Loans on Nov. 15 and 20, before someone successfully opened a Harris County Federal Credit Card account on Dec. 3.
Police said the victim discovered the account had a $14,459 balance and called a representative of the credit card company.
He said he had nothing to do with applying for the card or the money accrued in the account. There was no financial loss for him, police said, adding the Harris County Federal Credit Card company closed the fraudulent account and is investigating the crime.
In cases like this police recommend freezing credit card accounts, contacting the Social Security Administration and the three major credit bureaus.
