MONROE, Conn. — A 78-year-old Monroe man was charged with DUI after allegedly failing to stop for a red light at the intersection of Main Street and Victoria Drive Friday evening.
At approximately 5:06 p.m., a police officer pulled over the man’s 2024 Genesis GV70 in the 90-block of Route 25 as the driver headed north.
While talking to the driver, police said the officer noticed his eyes were bloodshot and glossy, and smelled the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from inside vehicle.
The driver admitted to having one beer and did not perform field sobriety tests to standard, leading to his arrest, according to police. At headquarters, breath tests showed a blood alcohol level of about one-and-a-half times the legal limit, police said.
He was charged with DUI and failure to obey a traffic light, before being released after posting seven percent of his $500 bond for a Feb. 2 court date.
Honda Pilot vs. utility pole
A 24-year-old Danbury man was heading north on Barn Hill Road in his 2006 Honda Pilot early Monday morning, when his vehicle slid off the road to the right and struck a mailbox and a utility pole, snapping it upon impact.
Police said the crash occurred in the 300-block of Barn Hill, just south of Nickel Place.
Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel treated the driver for minor injuries and he declined a trip to a hospital, according to police.
He was issued an infraction for driving too fast for conditions and his Honda was towed due to disabling damage.
Frontier Communications was notified about the damaged utility pole and Monroe Public Works was asked to sand the slippery area of the roadway.
