Masuk High’s boys basketball team had a win and a loss in a pair of competitive road games this week. The Panthers beat Pomperaug of Southbury 44-42 on Monday and lost 61-54 at Joel Barlow of Redding on Thursday.
Points were at a premium in a defensive-minded matchup with Pomperaug. Matt Boyle was dominant on the offensive end with 24 points to go along with eight rebounds and Saijon Gavin was huge on the glass and defensive end, tallying 10 points, 13 rebounds and three assists.
Owen Mok had three points and two assists; Nate O’Hara five points, three rebounds, and two steals; Will Scholz recorded two assists, one rebound and two steals.
Justin Zyskowski had two points and a rebound; Caleb Purdy one assist and a rebound; Cristian Ventresca one rebound; and Joao Rassati a steal. Jaylen Africot provided good defense for Masuk.
In the game with Barlow, Gavin poured in 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had an assist. Owen Mok dropped in 16 points, hitting four 3-pointers, to go along with two rebounds and an assist. Matt Boyle scored 13 points and had six rebounds and three assists.
Nate O’Hara logged five points, five assists, seven rebounds and three steals. Justin Zyskowski recorded two assists; Rassati had an assist; and Scholz recorded two assists and a rebound. Africot and Purdy had good defense.
“Senior Captain Saijon Gavin was fantastic attacking their 6-foot-8 center with 20 points and 7 rebounds,” Masuk Coach Pete Szklarz said. “Owen Mok was able to stretch the zone with four threes. Sophomores Matt Boyle and Nate O’Hara continue to play hard and have great games, as they have had all season. All season we have continued to improve tremendously due to our seniors Saijon Gavin, Jaylen Africot and Nick Rodrigues.”
Masuk hosts Weston in a battle of teams with 4-8 South-West Conference records in the regular-season finale Tuesday at 7 p.m. Masuk stands at 6-13 overall and Weston stands at 7-12.
