Donations to Monroe Police Toy Drive, some in memory of two children

MONROE, Conn. — Toys collected in memory of Renee Freer, 8, who was murdered in 1977, and Stephen Misencik, 7, who drowned in Whitney Pond in 1966, were added to the Monroe Police Department’s Toy Drive last Saturday.

John Wasik, left, with Det. Jeff Marcel.

Police officers collected donations outside Awesome Toys & Gifts, 464 Main St., which will go to The Center for Family Justice in Bridgeport to bring smiles to children of the families it serves.

CFJ offers free and confidential services to victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse and child abuse.

The police toy drive will be held again this coming Saturday, Nov. 22, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Awesome Toys will give a 20 percent discount on purchases made for the toy drive.

Among those contributing to the police toy drive Saturday, was John Wasik, a cousin of Freer’s, said he wanted to collect toys in memory of Renee and of his friend, Stephen Misencik. Helping Wasik was Mardi Kane, a childhood friend of Freer’s.
