Masuk boys basketball team tangles with SWC foes on home court

MONROE, Conn. — Masuk High’s boys basketball team had a 1-1 week in a pair of home games against South-West Conference opponents, falling 58-57 to New Milford on Monday and defeating Immaculate of Danbury 51-43 on Thursday.

Nate O’Hara and the Panthers are coming off a hard-fought loss to New Milford and win over Immaculate.

“We continue to improve every day,” Coach Pete Szklarz said. “This group works extremely hard and we are getting big contributions from a number of different players.”

In the New Milford game, Saijon Gavin scored 15 points, grabbed five rebounds and handed out four assists.

Owen Mok scored 11 points, had five rebounds and three steals. Matt Boyle scored 11 points and had four rebounds and four steals.

Joao Rassati had nine points, three assists and a trio of steals. Nate O’Hara dropped in eight points to go along with seven rebounds, five steals and three of assists. Cristian Ventresca contributed three points and three rebounds.

In the win over Immaculate, Gavin had a strong all-around effort as he racked up 17 points, had five rebounds, three assists, three steals and a trio of blocks.

Matt Boyle scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds. O’Hara scored nine points, had three assists and three steals.

Mok compiled eight points and six steals. Will Scholz scored five points, pulled down six rebounds and came away with eight steals. Ventresca scored two points.

The Panthers are 2-4 and will visit New Fairfield Monday before returning home to play Newtown Thursday, both at 7 p.m.
