NEWTOWN, Conn. — Clinging to postseason playoff hopes, Masuk High’s football team put forth a solid effort but fell 34-13 to host Newtown the night before Thanksgiving.
Masuk finished the season with a record of 5-5 and Newtown improved to 8-2.
The Panthers held the Nighthawks to a field goal on its first few possessions but, after the teams traded punts, surrendered a touchdown and trailed 10-0 after one quarter of play.
Masuk got back into the game on Tanner Walker’s 18-yard TD reception from Aaron Champagne to pull within 10-7.

Back-to-back quarterback sacks by Luke Costantini and Aidan Diaz forced a turnover on downs in the second quarter, but the offense could not capitalize. NHS led 17-7 at the half.
Newtown pulled ahead 24-7 in the third, but Masuk prevailed on a fourth and goal from the 16 as Champagne connected with Jake Viglione in the end zone. The extra point was blocked but Masuk had some hope.
The Panthers held the Nighthawks to a field goal and kept it a two-possession game heading into the fourth quarter, before a late TD sealed Newtown’s victory.
