SHELTON, Conn. — After scoring a pair of nicely set up goals through two periods of play the Masuk High hockey team pulled away in the third period for a 5-0 win over visiting Newtown-New Fairfield at the Sports Center of Connecticut on Saturday night.

Masuk, coming off a 7-2 win over the Fairfield co-op and a 4-1 victory over Woodstock Academy, got the shutout behind strong defense, a puck-possessing offense and sharp play of goaltender Maddex LaFountain who came up with some key saves when the game was close.

Luke Kondub had two goals and two assists, Graham Cybart notched a goal and an assist, and Chase DeSanto and Teddy Walsh also lit the lamp. LaFountain helped his own cause with a secondary assist on Masuk’s second tally.

The Panthers got on the board in the opening period when Kondub skated up the left side and sent a pass through the slot to Cybart who cashed in with a quick release.

Cybart returned the favor in the waning seconds of the second period, setting up Kondub who roofed a hard wrister under the cross bar for a 2-0 lead.

The Panthers put the game out of reach with a pair of goals in the opening five-plus minutes of the third.

Masuk will look to keep rolling when the team visits the Joel Barlow co-op at Danbury Ice Arena on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 5:45 p.m.
