Masuk High’s boys swimming and diving team defeated host New Fairfield-Danbury 95-90 in an exciting meet on Tuesday.
The first event, the 200 Yard Medley Relay, was very close. One of the Masuk relay teams placed 2nd with a time of 1:47:73. The team consisted of Will Hardy, Carter Adragna, Jack McHugh and Mason Eannotti.
Eannotti took first place in the 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 5:27:04 and Jacob Zajac earned third with a time of 6:20:12. After this event, the Panthers cut into the deficit to pull to within 65-60. In the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, one of the Masuk relay teams placed first with a time of 1:36:49. This relay consisted of Thomas Rodriguez, Aiden Cammarano, Aiden Rodas, and Akkie Yerragudi.
In the 100 Yard Backstroke, Hardy came in first with a time of 58:27 and McHugh was third with a time of 1:02:25, pulling Masuk to within three at 79-76.
In the 100 Yard Breaststroke, Adragna was first in 1:07:36 and Cammarano third with a time of 1:14:90.
In the last event of the meet, the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, Masuk solidified the win by taking second and third place. The second place relay team consisted of William Rodriguez, Logan Singh, Jacob Zajac, and Matt Buzinaro with a time of 4:06:01. The third place relay team consisted of Ayan Kagtada, Jude Mathien, Jake Ryan, and Lukas Sgandurra with a time of 5:00:65.
Masuk’s divers played a key role in the team win with Ryan earning first with a score of 207.7 and Mathien second with a score of 108.6.
Masuk improved to 5-3 heading into a Wednesday, Feb. 18, home clash with Brookfield High at 4 p.m.
A loss to Pomperaug
Masuk was coming off a hard-fought 94-83 loss at home to the Pomperaug Panthers on Friday, Feb. 6.

The Masuk Panthers earned first in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, an exciting start to the meet. The relay team consisted of Hardy, Adragna, McHugh and Eannotti. Masuk won the event in a time of 1:43:53, three-tenths of a second ahead of Pomperaug’s relay.
Adragna earned first in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 22:42. Masuk also took first in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay in a time of 1:37.58. The relay team consisted of Hardy, Adragna, McHugh and Eannotti.
In the 100 Backstroke, Hardy came in first in 55:00. Pomperaug went exhibition after this event. In the 100 Yard Breaststroke Adragna was first with a time of 1:04:98.
In diving, Ryan took second with a score of 181.90, Mathien was fifth with a 111.55 and Lukas Sgandurra took sixth with a 98.95 in his first meet. Ryan and Mathien have both qualified for SWC finals and Ryan has qualified for Class M State Finals. All three divers are sophomores.
Coaches Jenna Manion and Michael Shortell were very happy with the times and scores the Masuk competitors earned.
“We are proud that we took first place in five different events against a talented Pomperaug team,” Shortell said. “A great performance by the Masuk Panthers.”
