Monroe Police: Drunk driver hit cones, caution tape and a downed tree

MONROE, Conn. — Police officers used traffic cones and yellow caution tape to cordon off both lanes in the 1200-block of Monroe Turnpike and keep drivers away from a downed tree late Monday night, but a 43-year-old Monroe woman allegedly drove through anyway, before crashing into the tree.

The driver continued on, before an officer pulled over her vehicle, which had a windshield that was completely shattered, according to police.

Police said the officer asked the driver if she saw the cones and caution tape and she said, “yeah.”

Her eyes were bloodshot and the officer smelled the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on her, police said, adding she admitted to having one beer.

Field sobriety tests were not performed to standard, leading to her arrest, and breath tests at police headquarters showed her blood alcohol level was about two-and-a-half times the legal limit, police said.

She was charged with DUI and released the next morning after posting seven percent of her $500 bond for a Jan. 20 court date.

The incident occurred near Hammertown Road at approximately 11:30 p.m.
