Monroe police make a DUI arrest, respond to a three-vehicle-crash

MONROE, Conn. — A 65-year-old Hamden man was charged with DUI early Friday morning, after a police officer pulled over his Jeep Grand Cherokee on Monroe Turnpike.

At approximately 2 a.m., a police officer noticed the Jeep come from Route 110, go through the roundabout and head north on Route 111.

Police said the officer noticed how the driver’s speed fluctuated from 30 to 32 mph in the 40 mph zone, then followed the vehicle and observed the Jeep going over the fog line and the double yellow center line several times.

The officer stopped the Jeep in the 1200-block of Route 111. The driver said he was coming from Milford while on his way to Hamden.

The officer noticed the man’s eyes were glossy and bloodshot and asked if he had anything to drink, police said, adding he told the officer he had one cocktail.

Field sobriety tests were allegedly not performed to standard, leading to his arrest, and breath tests taken at headquarters showed a blood alcohol level of nearly one-and-a-half times the legal limit, according to police.

He was charged with DUI and failure to drive in the proper lane and released after posting seven percent of his $500 bond for a Jan. 5 court date.

A three-vehicle-crash

A 45-year-old Monroe man was found to be at fault for a three-vehicle-crash at the intersection of Monroe Turnpike (Route 111) and Elm Street late Saturday afternoon.

At approximately 4:55 p.m., police said he was heading north on Route 111 and stopped in the left turn lane at the intersection with Elm Street.

Police said he failed to yield to traffic when he turned left in his 2016 Subaru Forester, and into the path of a 2019 Toyota RAV4, driven by a 17-year-old Monroe male, who was heading south.

The Toyota struck the Subaru on the passenger side and, following the impact of the collision, the Subaru continued on and crashed into a 2019 Acura RDX, driven by a 17-year-old Monroe male who was stopped at a red light on Elm Street, while waiting to turn right onto Route 111.

Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel evaluated all three drivers for possible injuries, but all declined a trip to the hospital.

The driver of the Subaru was issued an infraction for failure to grant the right-of-way on a left turn and all three vehicles were towed due to disabling damage.
