Monroe Police Reports: 2 crashes, a threat, a stolen Jeep on Super Bowl Sunday

MONROE, Conn. — Stevenson and Monroe firefighters stabilized a Toyota RAV4 using rescue struts, cutting glass and helping the driver out of his vehicle after it rolled onto its side following a two-vehicle-crash in the intersection of routes 34 and 111 early Thursday morning.

Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel treated the driver, a 17-year-old Seymour male, for injuries and took him to Bridgeport Hospital for further medical care, and police officers issued him an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.

The other driver, an 81-year-old Newtown man, was not hurt, according to police.

At approximately 7:38 a.m., the teenager told officers he stopped at a stop sign on Route 111 (Monroe Turnpike) before turning left onto Route 34 (Roosevelt Drive), where a 2021 Subaru Outback “appeared out of nowhere,” and struck the side of his Toyota, forcing it to rollover onto its passenger side, according to the report.

The Newtown man reportedly told officers he was heading east on Route 34, when the glare from the sun made it difficult to see the roadway. Then the Toyota pulled out in front of him and it was too late to avoid a collision, police said.

Police said two separate witnesses observed the Toyota pulling out in front of the Subaru before the crash.

Both vehicles were towed and there was significant traffic congestion in the area during rush hour, while first responders worked at the scene.

Icy road leads to crash

A 17-year-old Monroe male was issued an infraction for driving too fast for conditions Saturday night, after crashing his 2018 Audi A4 into a utility pole on the side of Bug Hill Road and snapping it in half, according to police, who said the top part of the pole fell onto the front of the car.

The driver reportedly told officers he lost control of his car on the icy roadway around 8:07 p.m., before going off the right side and hitting the pole, according to the report. Police said the accident occurred just east of Cutlers Farm Road.

The driver was evaluated by Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel, but declined a trip to the hospital. His Audi was towed due to disabling damage.

An alleged threat

A 51-year-old Easton woman turned herself in on a warrant on Feb. 6 after allegedly threatening to kill her sister’s kids in a Facebook message.

Police said the woman showed up at her sister’s house unannounced after being out of touch for 10 years and was advised to leave. Then a week later, on Jan. 29, she allegedly threatened her sister’s kids over Facebook after being called out for her own mishaps in life, according to police.

The victim reportedly blocked her sister on the group chat, though the accused still found ways to message her, police said.

Before applying for the warrant, police warned the woman not to have contact with the victim.

She was charged with threatening in the second-degree and breach of peace in the second degree and released after posting seven percent of her $15,000 court-set bond. Police said she was taken to court Monday.

A Stolen Jeep

A 43-year-old Monroe man reported his gray 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee stolen late Sunday night.

Police said he had parked it on the side of the street, while attending a Super Bowl party at a friend’s house on Meadows End Road. According to the report, he parked his Jeep at 4:45 p.m. and learned it was missing when he went back outside at 10:35 p.m.

Police said the victim told them he had left his vehicle unlocked with the keys inside.

Officers canvassed the area in an effort to find clues, before turning the matter over to the Detective Division to investigate the case.
