Record set as Masuk swimmers shine in Class M, State Open Championships

Masuk swimmers included Betty Glus, Laney Stillway, Lena Savkovic, Julia Iannotta, Stella Oliveira, Izzy Murzinska, Skye Eannotti and Anastazja Malecka.

Masuk’s girls swimmers had a nice showing at the Class M State Championships, held at West Hartford’s Cornerstone Aquatics Center on Nov. 12, and were represented by record-setting Lena Savkovic in State Open at Yale University on Nov. 16.

Masuk placed eighth with 240 points among 19 teams in the Class M meet. The Panthers had eight girls swim 13 events – three relays and 10 individuals. The team recorded 10 best times and earned 10 medals.

  • 200 Medley Relay medaled placing fifth – Lena Savkovic, Laney Stillway, Izzy Murzinska, Skye Eannotti
  • 50 Free medaled placing sixth – Lena Savkovic
  • 200 Free Relay medaled placing fifth – Izzy Murzinska, Lena Savkoviv, Laney Stillway, Skye Eannotti
  • 100 Back medaled placing fourth – Lena Savkovic

Anastazja Malecka, Betty Glus, Izzy Murzinska, Julia Iannotta, Laney Stillway, Lena Savkovic, Skye Eannotti, and Stella Oliveira for finishing out their seasons with strong swims.

Savkovic holds the Masuk record for 100 back that she set last year at States. This year, she broke her own record of 59.77 with a 59.54. She was just one place shy in an extremely close race of automatically making All State but did qualify for the State Open.

Savkovic swam the 50 free and 100 back.

“I’m proud of her. It’s so hard to swim back to back championship meets,” said Masuk Coach Emily DeMace, noting that the swimmers competed in four total postseason meets, including trials, over two weeks. “She left with a smile on her face so that’s always positive. Her 50 free was 25.51 and her 100 back time was 1:00.99. That was her fastest ever Opens time from all her years swimming 100 back at opens.”

“She is one of our top swimmers at Masuk, and she is one of the fastest swimmers in the state swimming with all the other fastest swimmers in the state. It’s truly amazing to watch and be a part of. And to know that she is a part of that is amazing. She works hard and she deserves all the credit and recognition and success. They all do,” DeMace said.

Some bittersweet moments from the Class M meet: Senior Skye Eannotti swam her last 500 of her high school career. She got a seasonal best, only three seconds off of her all-time best her freshmen year. Eannotti also swam her all-time best time 50 free.

Senior Anastazja Malecka swam her all-time best time in the 50 free.

Izzy Murzinska took over the B Final heat and crushed her competition. She placed ninth out technicalities. Heats are locked in finals but she would have placed seventh after out-swimming two girls who competed in the Championship A Final.

Masuk’s 400 free relay (Anastazja Malecka, Julia Iannotta, Stella Oliveira, Betty Glus) dropped almost 4.5 seconds. They had some fast splits and great times.
