Young Panthers set to hit the court

Saijon Gavin, in action last winter, returns to lead the Panthers this season.

MONROE, Conn. — Masuk High’s young boys basketball team is ready for game action and developing as the season unfolds. The Panthers are led by senior forward and captain Saijon Gavin.

With graduation having claimed much of last year’s roster, Coach Peter Szklarz and company will look to the emergence of junior guard Owen Mok, and sophomores Matt Boyle, Nate O’Hara and Caleb Purdy.

“We are a young team that will look to improve, play hard and battle every day in practice and games,” Szklarz said.

“I’m very impressed with how hard this group plays and works in practice. Being a young and new team there’s a lot of learning and adjustments that are taking place. Saijon Gavin is our leader and has been doing a great job of providing experience and taking charge on and off the court,” the coach added.

Masuk gets started with a Friday night visit to Trumbull at 7 p.m. Nonconference road action continues through the rest of the calendar year with games against St. Joseph of Trumbull, Bridgeport Central and Oxford.

The first scheduled home game, also the South-West Conference opener is Jan. 5, when New Milford comes to town at 7 p.m.
